Best Cameras for the beginning photographer 2018-Denver Family Photographer – Truth Photography LLC

As we enter the final month of the year and many of you are thinking about gift giving, or maybe catching something amazing on sale for yourself, I wanted to share some recommendations with you on some of the best cameras this year for the new or amateur photographer. I have broken down the list into types of cameras and included links to make it easier for you to find exactly what you need.

DSLR Camera’s

For those of you who don’t speak in camera terms a DSLR is a camera where you can switch out the lenses, there are a lot of other differences between a DSLR camera and a point and shoot however for the purpose of this blog I am going to stick to the basics. Choosing the best lens for what you are shooting can be a huge advantage however this is not the only reason to choose a DSLR. DSLR cameras actually have a larger sensor than point and shoot cameras which results in a less grainy picture, faster speeds and better image quality overall. Here are my two top picks for DSLR camera.

Canon EOS Rebel SL2

The Canon EOS Rebel SL2 is a great lightweight entry level DSLR. It gets great reviews not only for photos but also for video. It is the smallest DSLR on the market which makes it great for travel and easier to tote around for moms who have a million other things to carry! This camera features a touch screen, built in wi-fi, bluetooth and an external microphone jack for those looking to use it for video. Currently you can purchase this camera with a kit lens and accessories on Amazon for $599.00

Check out the camera and all the details on amazon here:

Nikon D3500

The Nikon D3500 is the camera for you if you are looking for a cost effective camera with great battery life. Unlike the Canon SL2 this camera does not have a touch screen or wi-fi however if those features are not high on your list this camera sells for a lower price tag and has a much longer battery life. While I have always been a Canon girl myself, in comparing the two camera and reading reviews I am finding that in this case the Nikon camera may be the best choice for many beginners. Especially since you can put that money saved towards some great lenses! Currently you can grab this camera with TWO lenses on Amazon for $499.00

 Lenses for your DSRL Camera

50mm F/1.8

Both Canon and Nikon offer a 50mm 1.8 lens for around $100-$125. This lens is a great value at a low cost. The 50mm has beautiful images quality, is great in low light and is very affordable for the beginner photographers. You will also find that you get a sharper image with this fixed lens than you would with a zoom lens.

Tamron 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3

If you are looking for a zoom lens the Tamron 18-200mm lens might be a great option for you. This is a great lens for everything from portraits to sports photography. While the zoom lens will not give you the crisp focus that the 50mm will it will allow you to zoom in at times where you can’t get physically closer to your subject and at only around $200 the Tamron is a much cheaper option than the Canon and Nikon brand lenses, just make sure you choose the correct lens for your camera (Tamron for Canon or Tamron for Nikon) I have attached the links for both below.

Point and Shoot Cameras

Maybe you don’t need something this fancy? Maybe you just want something that will fit in your purse or diaper bag? Then a point and shoot camera may be the way to go. I opted for this section to focus on cameras that have features that you won’t find on your camera phone. So here are my favorite two waterproof, drop proof cameras.

Olympus Tough TG-5

This is a great camera for those who want to do underwater photography or video or just want one really tough camera. It has a 25-100mm lens, is waterproof to 50 feet, shock resistant up to 7 feet, Freeze-proof to 14 degrees, and crush-proof to 220lbs making it a great camera for those who love to travel.  Currently you can pick this up on Amazon for $399.00

Nikon Coolpix W100

This camera is similar to the Tough in many ways at a lower price point. It is only waterproof down to 33 feet and shockproof to 5.9 feet. It is freeze-proof to 14 degrees as well however from what I found does not claim to be crush proof. Still at less than half of the price of the Tough it could be the best camera for someone who doesn’t need all of the bells and whistles. Currently

Hopefully this helps you pick out the perfect option for taking photos of your family. I would love your feedback in the comments, tell me what cameras you love!
