Today I’m sharing another guest post by local DoTERRA Rep. Chelsea Schofield. Like myself Chelsea is a wife, mama and local business owner here in Thornton Colorado. I asked Chelsea to put together a guide on some oils you can use for your kids. Here is what Chelsea had to say:
Lets talk about essential oils for kids. There’s so much information out there and it can be so overwhelming to sort through all the noise.
The good news is that I’m here to simplify things for you. I also believe that it’s helpful to back up what we say with research, so let’s start there.
One of the things that sold me on essential oils and using them in our home were our personal experiences. I think that’s probably how most of us fall in love with them, so having research just reinforces what we already know and have experienced.
Our story began on Christmas Day when our youngest woke up from his nap with the beginning signs of a respiratory infection. Being that all of the doctor’s offices were closed for the holiday (and would be for the rest of the week) we were dreading the idea of possibly spending Christmas at urgent care. My mom had some essential oils and suggested we give them a try before leaving. We agreed & applied a combo of oils on his chest and bottoms of his feet that we had diluted in coconut oil. Within a few hours we’d already noticed a difference in how he was doing. It was such a relief. The next morning he woke up as if nothing had ever happened!
Research backs up our experience in a study done by Kilina & Kolesnikova in 2010 where they stated, “Children who inhaled a mixture of essential oils had 42% fewer upper respiratory infections and were less likely to require antibiotics & decongestants.”
And who doesn’t want their kids to fall asleep and get a good night’s rest? All the mamas raise their hand, am I right?
“Diffusing lavender oil helped promote longer, sounder sleep.” Stated in a study by Lilihei and Halcon in 2014.
Anyone else getting notes home from lice outbreaks happening in their kid’s classroom? There’s an oil for that! Melaleuca has been shown to kill head lice. We personally use it as a preventative measure as well.
Alright, enough about that. You want to know how to use them. Right? Well, you’ve got options. You can use diffusers, aromatic jewelry or even just having it on a cotton ball or smelling them straight out of the bottle are great ways to get those aromatic benefits. For specific things like tummy aches we like to use the oils directly on their little bellies. It’s important to dilute oils when you’re using them for kiddos though. By that I mean using a carrier (coconut oil, olive oil, Shea butter, unscented lotion, etc) to slow the absorption process. There are so many tools and resources that really break down these uses for you and a wealth of recipes to help simplify it for you! I put a handy little resource together with some gentle oils for children. I’d be happy to pass it on to you if you send me a message.
But the cute labels to these kid specific recipes are just the cutest so be sure to head on over to my Facebook and message me to get yours!
